In this video, Hans shares how creating a combined grading category can help teachers get the most out of Grade Book in onCampus, our learning management system.
I remember the first time I used an online grade book: around October I realized that I hadn’t done a good job setting it up. The problem was I hadn’t thought through the number and kinds of assignments I was going to give my students.
Let’s say you have a category for Reading Quizzes and another for Daily Homework each worth 10% of the overall grade. By October, students have fifteen assignments in the Daily Homework category but you’ve only given one Reading Quiz.
If a student fails one Daily Homework, that’s not such a big deal because there are fourteen other assignments in the category to balance it out.
But if a student fails the one Reading Quiz their overall grade will go down quite a bit!
A good way to get around this problem is by having a combined grading category like Homework & Quizzes and using the assignment weight to make certain assignments worth more within the category.
Of course, some assignments like the final exam will always be worth more… but you, your students, and their parents are all aware of just how important the final exam will be!
