As of August 2019, Blackbaud’s education Management portfolio is OneRoster compliant.

What is OneRoster?

OneRoster is a standard set of REST application programming interfaces (APIs), which enable schools to securely and reliably exchange information about rosters, course materials, and grades between multiple web services—typically between a student information system (SIS) and another application such as a learning management system (LMS).

“While Blackbaud is committed to our single-platform vision, we also recognize that schools need to use other applications and we want to make it easy for them,” said Blackbaud Product Manager Angela Addison. “OneRoster enables Blackbaud and our partners to offer our schools choices in the tools they use without incurring the cost of custom integrations or the inefficiencies of manually keeping data in sync—it’s a win-win for everyone.”

OneRoster is managed by IMS Global Learning Consortium, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to “Advance technology that can affordably scale and improve educational participation and attainment.” IMS Global is also known for managing other standards for integrated educational environments, most notably Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI).

Through OneRoster, schools can create efficiencies and maintain better accuracy in data transfers by reducing the number of manual roster and data exports. These benefits help faculty and administrators who manage internal data resources at schools the most, but they can also have a positive impact for students and parents.

“With Blackbaud’s new integration with OneRoster, Calvert Hall was able to assign McGraw Hill digital resources to entire course sections without needing to build a single user account or roster,” said Austin Ewachiw, network administrator at Calvert Hall College High School in Baltimore. “Teachers and students simply access their electronic books via single-sign-on from their class page. What was once a truly cumbersome process has been reduced to a single click—how cool is that!”

Blackbaud has implemented multiple API endpoints for OneRoster integrations and will continue to add more. Supported endpoints currently include the "consumer core" and "rostering provider" endpoint groups, which enable one-way sync of data from Blackbaud Student Information SystemTM through the OneRoster integration into the school’s learning management system. These endpoints handle academic sessions, classes, courses, demographics, enrollments, grading periods, organizations, schools, students, teachers, terms and users.
