The product development team at Blackbaud K-12 has been hard at work redeveloping the global navigation for administrative tasks within Blackbaud's education management solutions (formerly the “ON” products). Driven by school requests and feedback compiled from multiple usability studies, the new navigation was previewed in an April 10 webinar—watch the recording here. Interested schools can also register for the early adopter program (EAP) that will begin in May.
“Our schools have spoken,” said Cory Kennedy, director, product management, “and they want a more intuitive navigation structure that better represents their daily workflow. Our goal is to improve efficiency on commonly accessed items, especially for those who have managerial duties spanning multiple products. We also want to make it easier to find the less-used tasks.”
Instead of organizing admin tasks by product, where someone looking to update academic course sections currently starts in Blackbaud Learning Management System™ (formerly onCampus®) the new structure takes a more intuitive approach by bundling common tasks together in school-centric navigation. For example, most Blackbaud Learning Management System and Blackbaud Student Information System™ (formerly onRecord®) tasks will now be found under the “Academics” heading, which has moved from the right to the left side of the screen.
"We love the new navigation,” said Kathleen Peak, data systems manager at Upper Canada College. “It's organized to represent the way we work, taking into account the cross-functional roles that users play within our schools, allowing for better understanding and efficiencies. This is a great new model—we can't wait to roll it out."
It’s important to note that the navigation changes only affect users performing administrative tasks—constituent navigation for parents, students, and alumni remains the same. The changes also don’t alter product features or functionality.
Pending a successful EAP trial, the full release to all schools is anticipated for July to coincide with the Blackbaud K-12 User Conference. This improvement to the Blackbaud Enrollment Management System™ (formerly onBoard®), Blackbaud Learning Management System, Blackbaud Student Information System, and Blackbaud School Website System™ (formerly onMessage®) navigation puts us one step closer to a greater usability enhancement.
“The master plan is to provide administrative users with access to all of the Blackbaud solutions they use—everything from the “ON” products to Smart Tuition and Raiser’s Edge NXT—in one convenient toolbar,” Kennedy said. “This release puts us on schedule for the one-Blackbaud enhancement next year.”
