The Student Experience: Remote Learning in Blackbaud's LMS

March 16, 2020 Jackie Christensen

Hi everybody, it's Jackie Christensen from Blackbaud's education product management team.
In this video, I want to share how Blackbaud's LMS can be used to facilitate remote learning by offering a hub for all your school's communications and resources that students and parents can easily access.
I'm going to log in as a student to show you the outcome of maximizing your Blackbaud tools.
I'm in as Judy Tucker. Probably one of the most useful places for Judy to start is her Assignment Center. This is the place where she can find all the work that she is responsible for completing, aggregated in one place.
First, you'll notice that Judy's Teacher is using Online Discussions in a pretty creative way. He’s using it to do a virtual learning check-in. This serves a number of different purposes. First, it helps students set an intention for the day by engaging with their teacher and class. It's also a way for teachers to check on engagement and follow-up with any students who don't respond in a timely manner. Teachers who are not doing any type of synchronous meeting through a web conference can use the responses to then record attendance in Blackbaud's SIS.
Now, let's check out this Mitosis assignment. Here, Judy can see the assignment details, including supplemental materials. She can also view the rubric to get some clear guidelines around expectations. And she can also submit her term paper online. By the way, if you're a Google school, be sure to check out our Google Drive integration, which allows students to attach submissions right from their Google Drive.
Once Judy has submitted her term paper, she is now going to focus on taking an online assessment. Here, the teacher is using the four different question types—essay, multiple-choice, true or false, and fill-in-the-blank. You'll also see that Judy is seeing an option to save for later; however, teachers can choose whether or not they're supporting this option and they can also select some different ways for displaying the results.

Next, Judy is going to review her class resources by going to her actual advanced biology class. She’s going to land on the Bulletin Board by default where her teacher can communicate general information. Keep in mind that students and parents can opt-in to receive email and text notifications from their settings. The content types that are probably most useful to set up will be assignment added, assignment change, announcement posted, and news posted. You'll notice for announcements and news users can actually select what types of announcements and news they want to sign up for.

Going back to her course, she's next going to visit Topics. This is where her teacher Mr. Abelle has aggregated learning resources including links, photos, downloads, videos, as well as embedded third-party tools Judy can engage with.

Keep in mind that Judy and her parents can also access more general school communications as well, including Resources, Activity Streams, and News. So Judy and her parents have a clear path to getting the latest school information and resources from one central hub.
